Microsoft has created a classroom assistance application for OneNote and SharePoint Online in Office 365, soon after Google released a similar one for its Apps email and collaboration suite.
With OneNote Class Notebook Creator, teachers can set up individual notebooks for each student, a common library for class documents and materials, and a group collaboration space for collective activities, hosted in SharePoint Online and using OneNote as the front-end interface.
Extreme Networks announced the availability of an integrated solution for Microsoft’s Unified Communications platform, Lync. The announcement is well timed, as there is no hotter UC platform today than Lync. Over the past few years, Microsoft has been aggressively getting Lync into its customers’ hands. However, the majority of customers have been using Lync for its desktop features, such as chat, presence, and web conferencing. Over the past year or so, Microsoft has been much more aggressive in getting its customers to adopt Lync voice and video.
Polycom and Microsoft continue to offer an integrated solution, this time with Polycom’s introduction of RealConnect for Microsoft Lync. The solution is designed to unify video collaboration across Lync and non-Lync environments by simplifying the end-user video experience. RealConnect brings Lync and non-Lync users together, allowing users to choose the platform they prefer.
Evernote is in a good position coming into its fourth annual Evernote Conference here in San Francisco. With 100 million users, plenty of people are using the note-taking, memory-augmenting app across their smartphones, tablets, and computers at home and at work. A year ago, Evernote launched the Evernote Market, a shop for physical goods (like notebooks, scanners, and a stylus) designed to make it easier to get stuff into the system.
Google's Slides presentation app can now be used without an Internet connection on iOS devices, joining the two other core office productivity tools in the company's suite, the Docs word processor and Sheets spreadsheet software.
With the move, announced Monday, Google also offers an alternative to Microsoft's native Word, Excel and PowerPoint apps for iPhones and iPads.
Cisco last week acquired Assemblage, a maker of browser-to-browser collaboration tools that do not require downloads, plugins or installations.
Assemblage offers real-time collaboration applications for shared whiteboarding, presentation broadcasting and screen sharing. Its products can set up inter-browser collaboration with just one mouse click, Cisco says. Assemblage provides WebRTC and HTML 5 based solutions.
Under pressure from Microsoft's Office 365, Google has launched a premium edition of Apps with unlimited cloud storage and extra IT controls, and it has improved the Docs office productivity suite.
Although this new edition is essentially Apps for Business with an extra set of features, Google has branded it differently, shifting the spotlight from "apps" to storage by calling it Drive for Work.
