IT budgets grow as SMBs spend more on tablets and cloud services

Small and medium-sized businesses are spending more money on IT, including adopting tablets, cloud services and virtualization to a greater extent, according to Spiceworks' State of SMB IT survey.

IT budgets at companies with fewer than 1,000 employees grew 6 percent in the first half of 2012 from the second half of 2011, and 15 percent year-over-year, according to the survey.

Small businesses are the vast majority of Google Apps early adopters

While Google is pitching Google Apps as an ideal productivity solution for enterprises, a large majority of its early adopters are small businesses.

A survey of more than 50,000 Google Apps administrators conducted by the Cloud Alliance for Google Apps finds that 69% of early adopters are businesses with between one and 10 employees and another 21% have between 11 and 50 employees.

Only 3% of Google Apps early adopters have more than 500 employees.

SMB Adoption Of Virtualization to Outpace Enterprises

According to a recent survey conducted by disaster recovery and data protection solutions provider Acronis, small and medium sized businesses (SMBs) around the world are planning to adopt server virtualization in 2012 at a faster pace than large enterprises. However, the survey also identified widespread backup and disaster recovery shortcomings for virtual servers amongst SMBs. Meanwhile, previous enthusiasm for cloud infrastructure has, at least so far, failed to turn into reality.

Avaya answers Cisco, Alcatel-Lucent with SMB switches

Avaya has unveiled low-end Ethernet switches for small and medium-sized enterprises and remote branches that include features usually found in higher-end enterprise-class switches.

The Avaya ERS 3500 line provides quick discovery and configuration of Avaya IP phones and centralized, Web-based GUI management of large branch office deployments. The line includes six Fast and Gigabit Ethernet switches available in 10- and 24-port configurations, with some featuring PoE+ and fanless operation.

Citrix buys cloud-based software platform maker Podio

Citrix has acquired Podio, a maker of a cloud-based software platform for project management and collaboration.

Podio's technology is aimed at small and medium-sized businesses and allows users to create workspaces, wherein specific groups of employees and clients can collaborate on a given project. Its cloud delivery model is ideal for distributed teams as well as mobile workers, Citrix said.
