Olympic Qualification Process

Introduction

An Olympic Qualification system for an Olympic sport discipline is proposed by the International Federation concerned to the International Olympic Committee for an approval. Once the International Olympic Committee approves a qualification system for the following edition of the Olympic Games, the International Olympic Committee posts this information for its affiliated National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the International Federation informs its affiliated National Federations.

For the 2012 Olympic Qualification system for Beach Volleyball all teams composed of two (2) athletes registered in each gender are able to accumulate FIVB World Ranking points or win qualification tournaments held worldwide from 1 June 2010 to 1 July 2012. During this period, quota places for the Olympic Games can be obtained as follows:

Olympic Ranking Men - Women

16 highest ranked National Olympic Committees / National Volleyball Federations (with a maximum of two (2) teams per NOC/NF) in the Olympic Ranking as of 18 June 2012

The Olympic Ranking is established based on the best 12 results as a team in the World Championships, World Tour events and recognized Continental Tour Finals (best of the two results) within the Olympic Qualification period from 1 January 2011 until 17 June 2012.

Beach Volleyball Continental Cup

The Beach Volleyball Continental Cup will take place between 1 June 2010 and 24 June 2012, with a direct elimination competition format where the winning NOC/NF(s) moves on to the next phase. The competition will consist of three phases: Sub zone, Zone and Continental Final. The five winning NOCs/NFs (one per Continental Confederation territory) per gender will qualify. At the Continental Cup Final, NOCs/NFs which have already obtained two quota places will compete in a bracket separate from those NOCs/NFs still seeking a quota place(s). NOCs/NFs may register to participate in the Continental Cup until 31 May 2010. Registration forms (BVBCP-01) are available on the FIVB website, and must be completed and returned to the respective Continental Confederation.

FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification

The second (2nd) and third (3rd) ranked NOCs/NFs from each of the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup Finals, which have not yet already obtained two quota places through the Olympic Ranking and/or Beach Volleyball Continental Cup, will qualify for the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification event.

The two best ranked teams per gender from the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification will qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games.

Athlete eligibility requirements

Athlete Olympic eligibility is set up of several criteria as set out below:

1 All athletes who have complied with the Olympic Charter may participate in the Olympic Games.
2 The minimum age for a Beach Volleyball athlete is 14 years old, on the first day of the competition at the Olympic Games.
3 To be eligible for participation in the Olympic Games, a competitor must comply with the rules of the International Volleyball Federation and must be entered by his/her NOC.
4 To be eligible to qualify for the 2012 Olympic Games in London, from the Olympic ranking, athletes must have participated in at least twelve (12) FIVB official Olympic Qualification Tournaments as an individual (World Tour/World Championships/recognized Continental Finals) scheduled from 1 January 2011 until 17 June 2012. Once a quota place is earned, an NOC/NF must choose its athletes from its best six (6) eligible pairs in the World Ranking issued on 18 June 2012.
5 To be eligible to qualify through the Continental Beach Volleyball Cup (CBVC), FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup (and/or Olympic Trials where relevant) athletes must have at least 12 participations as an individual in CBVC, National and/or Continental and/or FIVB events scheduled from 1 June 2010 until 24 June 2012.

National Olympic Trials

National Olympic Committees /National Volleyball Federations having obtained Olympic place/s may organize National Olympic Trials to determine the representing teams at the Olympic Games. Athletes qualifying through the National Olympic Trials must comply with the eligibility requirements point 1-3 and point 4 and/or point 5.

Host Country Representation

Great Britain, as a host country has the right to enter one place per gender at the 2012 Olympic Games in London, in compliance with the athlete eligibility requirements. Great Britain also has the right to participate in all qualification events in the above scheme to earn a second quota place, respecting the maximum number of quota places set for each National Olympic Committee/National Volleyball Federation.

Confirmation Process for quota Places

→ The FIVB will confirm the National Olympic Committees /National Volleyball Federations having earned quota places through the Olympic Ranking on 18 June 2012.


→ The National Olympic Committees/ National Volleyball Federations must confirm the obtained quota places through the Olympic Ranking by 25 June 2012.


→ The FIVB will confirm National Olympic Committees /National Volleyball Federations having earned quota places through the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup or FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup by 2 July 2012.


→ The National Olympic Committees /National Volleyball Federations must confirm the obtained quota places through the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup or FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup by 6 July 2012. National Olympic Committees /National Volleyball Federations should send the above confirmations directly to the FIVB and copy LOCOG.

If joint confirmation for any quota place is not provided by the respective deadline through the entry by name form, the FIVB will replace the quota place with the next highest ranked National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation not already qualified with the maximum quota places for the Olympic Games in accordance with the reallocation procedure described in Section F.

In case of an injury of one (1) athlete of the confirmed quota place, the National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation will maintain the quota place and will have the right to replace the injured athlete, respecting the eligibility requirements.

Reallocation Of unused if quota places

→ Any unused International Federation quota place among the 16 places obtained through the Olympic Ranking will be allocated to the next highest ranked eligible National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation (corresponding to the technical requirements) in the Olympic Ranking as per 18 June 2012, respecting the maximum number of quota places per National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation.


→ Any unused IF quota place from the Beach Volleyball Continental Cup or the FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Olympic Qualification will be allocated to the next highest ranked National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation of the respective competition, respecting the maximum number of quota places per National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation.

Reallocation Of unused Host Country Places

Should the host country decide not to participate or if they obtain two (2) quota places through qualification, this quota place(s) will be granted to the next highest ranked eligible National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation in the Olympic Ranking (as per 18 June, 2012) of the same gender, respecting the maximum number of quota places per National Olympic Committee /National Volleyball Federation.
